This Wasn’t the Dream
I recently had a conversation with a business owner who said something that immediately caught my attention.
They told me that administrative work was taking up far too much of their time. But then said something even more telling:
“I’m not having fun with my business anymore.”
That really stuck with me.
Most people don’t start a business because they dream of managing an overflowing inbox, scheduling meetings, updating spreadsheets, following up on paperwork, organizing files, or spending their evenings catching up on administrative tasks.
They start a business because they’re good at something. They have an idea, a skill, a passion, or an opportunity they want to pursue.
But somewhere between starting the business and growing the business, something changes.
The owner becomes the administrator, scheduler, project manager, marketer, bookkeeper, customer service department… and chief problem solver.
And because you can do all those things yourself, you do.
But What Is It Really Costing You?
The obvious answer is time.
Every hour you spend handling routine administrative or operational work is an hour you aren’t spending with clients, developing new business, building relationships, planning your next move, or simply doing the work you actually enjoy.
But there’s another cost that’s harder to measure.
You stop enjoying the business you worked so hard to build.
Your business begins to feel less like something you created and more like an endless list of things that need to get done.
That’s when it’s time to ask a different question.
Instead of:
“Can I do this myself?”
Ask:
“Is this really the best use of my time?”
Delegating Doesn’t Mean Losing Control
For many business owners, handing work to someone else isn’t easy.
You’ve developed your own way of doing things. You know your clients. You know the details. And sometimes explaining a task seems like it will take longer than simply doing it yourself.
But effective delegation isn’t about giving up control.
It’s about deciding where your time and expertise create the greatest value and finding the right person to take responsibility for the rest.
What Would You Do With The Time You Got Back?
That’s the question I think more business owners should ask themselves.
Would you spend more time developing new clients?
Would you finally tackle the project that’s been sitting on the back burner?
Would you leave the office at a reasonable hour and join your family for dinner?
Or maybe you’d simply get back to doing the part of your business that made you want to become a business owner in the first place.
And start having fun with it again!
At Job One Associates, we provide fractional business support for executives and business owners who need another capable set of hands, but don’t necessarily need or want another full-time employee.
That might mean someone who can coordinate executive and administrative projects, organize systems and processes, manage marketing activities, prepare documents, track deadlines, or simply ensure those little details don’t fall through the cracks.
Our job is to take things off your plate and make sure they get done! Because running your business shouldn’t be all about keeping up with your to-do list.
Consider It Done!
You built your dream business. Now let us give you back the time to enjoy it again.
